Founded by graphic designer Sam Dyer, Bitmap Books is an award-winning independent publisher of retro gaming books. The company aims to celebrate the software, hardware, developers, and code shops that laid down the foundations for the billion-dollar industry we know and love today.

Its sumptuous, high-quality books are presented as visual celebrations of the video game industry, enabling you to relive the golden age of video games. Twenty books have been published so far, and each is filled with interviews, quotes and anecdotes from the artists, programmers and publishers that created some of the most iconic games of all time.

Developers such as Mark Cerny, former SEGA staffer, creator of Marble Madness and chief architect of the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, legendary developer siblings Ste and John Pickford, point-and-click trailblazers Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda and many, many more have all contributed exclusive content to these books. These insightful interviews are complemented by bespoke features which painstakingly uncover the history of this fascinating realm of entertainment.

Beyond this, Bitmap has worked closely with industry veterans like SEGA, SNK and Atari to create officially-licensed books that come complete with enhanced access and exclusive assets. NEOGEO: A Visual History, for example, is perhaps of the most comprehensive English-language study on this legendary '90s family of systems, while SEGA Master System: a visual compendium has SEGA's official blessing, making it one of the most detailed and captivating tributes to the seminal 8-bit console yet seen.

Each and every Bitmap product is not only lavishly illustrated but also comes packed with text content created by some of the best writers operating in the video game industry. Respected writers such as Steve Jarratt (EDGE, Total!, Official Nintendo Magazine), Julian Rignall (CVG, Mean Machines) and Damien McFerran (Retro Gamer, Nintendo Life) have all contributed to these books, while talented illustrators like Craig Stevenson have helped to truly bring these pages to life.

Bitmap Books is dedicated to producing the very finest products and uses the very best printers working to the highest standards. The books themselves are bound using thread instead of glue for maximum durability and, where possible, include special bonus features, such metallic inks, bookmark ribbons and spot-varnished dust jackets. Many come supplied with heavy board slipcases. To ensure that your book reaches you in pristine condition, each is shrink-wrapped, and we take the utmost care when it comes to postage and packaging.

As well its existing wide and varied portfolio of books, Bitmap constantly has new titles in development and production, and is committed to growing its offering for many years to come. Be sure to check back regularly to see what other gaming icons are being celebrated in book form.
